Latin      : Bacopa monnieri

English  : Thyme leaved gratiola

Hindi      : Brahmi

It is an classical Ayurvedic brain tonic. Traditionally it has been used to improve memory and learning, increase intelligence, reduce depression, promote longevity, and decrease senility. It has been widely used to treat a variety of psychological, behavioral and cognitive problems. It is commonly used in herbal supplements for problems like Epilepsy, Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Alzheimer's disease, ADHD in children and for enhancing memory and learning skills. It supports the nervous system, particularly the hippocampus in the brain, allowing the body to maintain old nerve cells and synthesize new ones more quickly. Bacopa helps in repair of damaged neurons by enhancing kinase activity, neuronal synthesis and restoration of synaptic activity and ultimately nerve impulse transmission, thus helps in Alzheimer’s and other degenerative disorders of brain.

Concentrated extract of Brahmi contains the active molecules Bacoside A &B. Bacoside A assists in the release of Nitric oxide, that causes the relaxation of the aorta and veins and allows blood to flow more smoothly though the body. Bacoside B is a protein that nourishes the brain cells. Triterpenoid saponins and Bacosides of Bacopa monnieri play key role for enhancing nerve impulse transmission. Herasaponin present in Bacopa exhibits calming sedative action and thus reduce sleeplessness.

Biochemically, nervous-system effects of Brahmi have been attributed to an enhancement of the effects of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine and possibly serotonin or GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid).

A safe and effective herb known for its anti inflammatory, healing and laxative properties which makes it a natural choice against conditions like fistula in ano, hemorrhoids, fissures etc.

In ayurvedic texts it is known for its affinity towards lymphatic system as it is found to be useful in infective and inflammatory conditions of lymph glands and due to its preventive action in tuberculosis affecting the lymph nodes of the neck (Scrofula). The chemo preventive and cytotoxic effect (on tumor cells) of extract of Bauhinia variegata (EBV) was evaluated in N-nitrosodiethylamine (DEN, 200 mg/kg) induced experimental liver tumor  and human cancer cell lines. Oral administration of  extract of Bauhinia variegata (250 mg/kg) effectively suppressed liver tumor and decreased the elevated levels of liver enzymes.

Extract of Bauhinia Variegata was not only effective against liver tumors but also found to be cytotoxic against human epithelial larynx cancer (HEp2) and human breast cancer (HBL-100) cells. The antitumour activity of the extract of Bauhinia variegata (EBV) has also been evaluated against Dalton's ascitic lymphoma (DAL). EBV treatment was found to enhance peritoneal cell counts and was able to reverse the changes in the hematological parameters, protein and PCV consequent to tumor inoculation. A glycoside found in it (O-beta-galactopyranoside) showed excellent anti-inflammatory activity.

Latin     : Boswellia serrata

English : Indian olibenum

Hindi     : Shallaki

Boswellia serrata is a moderate to large branching tree found in India and Middle East. Strips of the bark when peeled away yield a gummy oleo resin. This gummy resin of boswellia has traditionally been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries as a remedy for a variety of health problems, including arthritis, liver diseases, obesity, and dysentery.  Current research imparts scientific credence to its traditional use, indicating that boswellia is especially useful as an anti-inflammatory for conditions such as arthritis, asthma, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease.   Boswellia appears to be a safe and effective herbal alternative to arthritis drugs.

Pharmacological studies have found that extracts from the gum resin of Boswellia serrata (Indian olibanum, a relative of frankincense) possess anti-inflammatory properties. In particular, the boswellic acids of  Boswellia serrata inhibit the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase which is responsible for the production of leukotrienes. This  leukotrienes. causes inflammation by promoting free radical damage, calcium dislocation, autoimmune responses, cell adhesion and the migration of inflammation  producing cells to the inflamed body area. The nonphenolic fraction of the gum resin of boswellia had marked sedative and analgesic action.
