  Latin Name Asphaltum

Hindi Name Shilajeet
Part Used Exudate

Ancient Ayurvedic texts, over 5,000 years ago, make reference to a mysterious substance called shilajeet, which literally means the "destroyer of weakness." The texts list its powerful health and spiritual benefits and the positive changes that shilajeet brought in the lives of those who used it. The sacred substance was prescribed for thousands of years for many different health problems and became a powerful tool in Ayurvedic medicine. There is some indication that shilajeet may have been the priceless soma of the Eastern alchemists.

Shilajeet is found predominately in Himalayan regions. Himalayan region encompassing India, China, Tibet and parts of central Asia was a home to rich plant life right from prehistoric times. The plants absorbed various nutrients and minerals from soil to form rich and green vegetation. The life of trees and plants there extended to many hundred and even thousands of years. After their time the plants Returned back to earth along with the minerals. This process continued over a period of many centuries. This remains of plant life in the specific climatic condition and altitude of Himalayas formed the Mineral Pitch known as Shilajeet.

1The spermatogenic activity of processed Shilajit were evaluated in oligospermic patients. Initially, 60 infertile male patients were assessed and those having total sperm counts below 20 million ml(-1) semen were considered oligospermic and enrolled in the study (n = 35). PS capsule (100 mg) was administered twice daily after major meals for 90 days. Twenty-eight patients who completed the treatment showed significant (P < 0.001) improvement in spermia (+37.6%), total sperm count (+61.4%), motility (12.4-17.4% after different time intervals), normal sperm count (+18.9%) with concomitant decrease in pus and epithelial cell count compared with baseline value. The Findings provide further evidence of the spermatogenic nature of Shilajit, as attributed in Ayurveda.

Shilajeet amplifies the benefits of other herbs by enhancing their bio-availability. It helps transport nutrients and cleanses toxins out of body system. It also improves emotional health and enhances the ability to handle stress. Shilajeet reduces recovery time in muscle, bone and nerve. Shilajeet is Rasayana that helps to improve our body’s natural resistance power.
